What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media and the creative process as a way to help both children and adults express emotions, process thoughts, and develop coping skills.

Art therapy has an added advantage of also being a non-verbal form of therapy. It can be helpful for individuals who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally, or who find it easier to express themselves through artistic expressions such as writing, drawing, movement and play. Art therapy has been used to help people with a wide range of issues, including:

Life Transitions, Traumatic Experiences, Mental Health Disorders, Grief And Loss, Developmental Disabilities, Physical Health Conditions, Relationship Difficulties, Stress And Many More.

  • The art therapist supports the client in accessing thoughts, emotions, and experiences through artwork and the therapeutic relationship that might be challenging to articulate verbally
  • The therapist encourages reflection and conversation, allowing clients to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and helps them to regain mastery over their lives

The Art Process:

  • Through the process of creating art, individuals are able to develop effective strategies for coping with difficult situations
